| Juhi Chawla - Remembering Punj [
SCREEN ]
What
was your feelings about the screening of your film Waris
Shah - Ishq Daa Waaris at IFFI, Goa?
I am glad that the film is reaching out to a wider audience
in Goa, at the same time I am also sad that it is being
featured as a part of Homage to Manoj Punj who left us
at a young age of just 37. Manoj was very keen on having
the film as part of the Indian Panaroma in Goa but unfortunately
we couldn't meet the deadline for the entry. I am here
with mixed feelings. How I wish Manoj was here to see the
ovation his film received here!
How
would you describe the young departed director?
Manoj Punj gave a special identity to the Punjabi Cinema.
He changed the history of Punjabi films with his debut
venture shaheed - E - Mohabbat Boota Singh which turned
out to be not only an aesthetically appealing film but
also a top grosser. Manoj made two more punjabi films -
Des Hoyaa Pardes and Waris Shah - Ishq Daa Waaris.
For
how long have you known the late Punj?
I knew him since last three years when I was offered Des
Hoyaa Pardes. I developed cold feet because I did not know
Manoj Punj at all. But when he canned an emotional scene
with me, I realized that he may be a debutant director
but he had tremendous potential. I enjoyed working with
this unit so much that when the shoot concluded and the
film was wrapped up, I requested producer Manjeet Maan
to take me on their next project too.
What
would you miss the most about Punj?
I really enjoyed working with him on both Des Hoyaa Pardes
and Waris..... Manoj had a wonderful way of giving the
artistes a free hand, letting her interpret the character
the way she felt comfortable and then gently giving it
the final touches as he wanted it to be portrayed. I will
miss him for the superb director and the wonderful person
that he was.
What
was the most striking quality of Punj as a Professional?
I guess, the fact that he was a voracious reader worked
in his favour greatly. It gave his thought process a depth
and analytical objectivity. He was always ready for creative
exchange of ideas. No ego hassles with him at all. And
above all, he was a thorough gentleman who respected his
colleagues.
Finally,
do you approve of Goa being made the permanent IFFI venue?
I am really glad that the Government has chosen neither
Mumbai nor Delhi but Goa as the permanent venue for hosting
the IFFI. Goa is a good choice though it is not easily
accessible from Mumbai, but it is a great place to chill
out. |
